A Legacy Intertwined with Hip-Hop

As Earth, Wind & Fire prepare to embark on this next chapter of their live performances, it’s a fitting time to reflect on their profound influence – not only on soul and funk but also on hip-hop culture. Over the years, hip-hop artists have tapped into the band’s timeless grooves and infectious melodies, sampling their work to create chart-topping hits.

  • “Brazilian Rhyme”: This jazzy, wordless gem has been sampled by legendary acts such as Nas (“Serious”), J Dilla (“Runnin'” by The Pharcyde), and A Tribe Called Quest (“Mr. Muhammad”), cementing its place in the golden age of hip-hop.
  • “That’s the Way of the World”: The emotional depth of this classic inspired UGK’s reflective track “One Day” and Puff Daddy’s introspective “Don’t Stop What You’re Doing”.
  • “Reasons”: This timeless ballad found new life in songs by Cam’ron (“Reasons”) and R. Kelly (“Spendin’ Money”), underscoring its enduring allure.
  • “Fantasy”: Its dreamy vibe fueled hits like Mase’s “Get Ready” and Will Smith’s “Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It.
  • “Shining Star”: The uplifting anthem was sampled by Big Daddy Kane (“Shine”) and DMX, proving its universal appeal.
  • “Be Ever Wonderful”: OutKast used this soulful tune to create the ethereal vibe of “SpottieOttieDopaliscious,” a modern classic.
  • “Devotion”: Even Queen Latifah paid homage to Earth, Wind & Fire in “Mama Gave Birth to the Soul Children.”

These culturally-charged songs demonstrate the band’s lasting relevance and their ability to inspire artists across genres – it’s a testament to the timeless depth of their music.
