Memphis Bleek, born Malik Deshawn Cox, burst onto the scene in the late ‘90s as one of the first artists signed to Roc-A-Fella Records. His debut album, Coming of Age, released on August 3, 1999, peaked at number 7 on the Billboard 200 chart and boasted the Swizz Beatz-produced hit single, “Memphis Bleek is…” and the banger “Is That Yo Chick,” featuring Missy Elliott and Jay-Z. Other tracks on the project resonated with the streets, capturing the essence of Brooklyn’s spirited rap scene. Bleek’s sophomore effort, The Understanding, dropped in 2000. and featured the hit anthem ”Do My…” featuring Jay-Z.” Bleek released M.A.D.E. in 2003 (featuring “It’s Alright” and “Round Here”) and 534 (featuring “Dear Summer” and “Like That”) in 2005, each project adding layers to his musical repertoire and showcasing his growth as an artist.
After his initial success, Bleek took a step back from the limelight. In 2009, he departed from Roc-A-Fella Records, urged by Jay-Z to establish his own path. This led to the creation of his label, Get Low Records, allowing Bleek to explore new avenues and mentor emerging talents.
Despite the hiatus from releasing studio albums, Bleek remained active in the music scene. He dropped mixtapes like The Movement in 2012, which garnered over 125,000 downloads on DatPiff, and continued to engage with his fanbase through live performances and collaborations.
The anticipation for Still R.O.C. intensified when Bleek announced a reunion with renowned producer Just Blaze. Their first collaboration in nearly two decades, the single “Durag Bleek,” released on June 14, 2024, blends nostalgic beats with contemporary flair, reminding fans of the magic they create together.
