#NextUp: NJ Rapper Fetty Wap

The state of New Jersey has produced gifted hip-hop talents like Redman, Queen Latifah, Wyclef Jean, and several others. Will newcomer Fetty Wap cement his name on this list?

The #NextUp rapper has been steadily extending the reach of his moniker in households and clubs around the country with his popular single, “Trap Queen.”

Signed to 300 Entertainment, the 24-year-old Paterson, NJ native, whom is blind in one eye, told XXL that southern rappers like Future, Rich Homie [Quan] and Young Thug inspire his sound because, “I like the way they changed rap—I want to say they changed hip-hop into a melody rap thing. You don’t really gotta rap no more, you can just say the verse with a swag now.”

This “swag” is evident on “Trap Queen,” a record Fetty turned his focus to after a huge success from his street level mixtape. He uploaded the record online as part of his "Up Next" EP, and months later it caught on virally.

"I knew the record was going to expand the way it did the third month after we dropped it we got 100,000 plays," Fetty told DJ Smallz. "The sixth month we hit a million, that's when we knew that it can't be only Patterson. There ain't a million people in Patterson listening. After that we was like 'we gotta push this,' we got on the net, we got on the phone and started going hard on the phones."

The song has amassed over 4 million views on YouTube and counting, so it’s safe to say Fetty Wap is #NextUp.
