News and a super trailer of the Atlanta rapper’s new show “All My Babies’ Mamas'” spawned anger and concern from the public and many civil rights groups, who felt Shawty Lo’s home life would only perpetuate ongoing stereotypes of African-American families. The concerns were so serious, that nearly 40,000 people signed an online petition demanding that the show never see the light of day. Feeling the pressure, the network has now decided to cancel the one-hour special.
The network previously defended the intentions of the show saying, “Oxygen’s one-hour special in development is not meant to be a stereotypical representation of everyday life for any one demographic or cross section of society,” the network said in an earlier statement.” However, they have had a quick change of heart and recently released a statement saying, “As part of our development process, we have reviewed casting and decided not to move forward with the special. We will continue to develop compelling content that resonates with our young female viewers and drives the cultural conversation.”
In response to news of a canceled show, the southern rapper is now taking action to bring his show back on air. He has started his own petition, which currently has over 220 supporters.
